KPop Demon Hunters: why kids are obsessed
The same songs on repeat at home, dance routines improvised in the middle of the living room, and three names that keep coming up: Rumi, Mira and Zoey. If you feel like the last person who hasn't heard of KPop Demon Hunters, don't worry, you're not alone.
Here's everything you need to understand the phenomenon: what the film is about, why kids love it so much, what age it suits, and how to extend the adventure with official KPop Demon Hunters toys.

What exactly is KPop Demon Hunters?
KPop Demon Hunters is an animated film produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind the Spider-Verse films, and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. It was released directly on Netflix on 20 June 2025 and went on to become the most-watched film in the platform's history.
The story: Rumi, Mira and Zoey are Huntrix (written HUNTR/X), a K-pop girl group that sells out stadiums. In secret, they are also demon hunters. Their voices power the Honmoon, a magical barrier that protects the world from demons. To break it, the demon king sends an unexpected rival: the Saja Boys, a boy band made up of demons disguised as idols.
The phenomenon has gone far beyond the screen: "Golden", performed by Huntrix, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It's probably the song you can hear being belted out in the next room.
Why kids love it
First, the music. The film is a true musical, packed with catchy pop songs that kids remember after one listen and act out with full choreography. Then there are the heroines: three strong, funny and very different friends who fight side by side. Every child quickly finds "their" favourite.
There's also plenty of humour, bright and colourful animation, and the whole world of K-pop, with its outfits, concerts and fans. But at the heart of the story is a simple message that speaks to kids: friendship, trust between friends and the courage to be yourself.
What age is the film suitable for?
In the United States, KPop Demon Hunters is rated PG, meaning parental guidance is suggested for younger viewers. The title may sound scary, but the tone is that of a family animated film: the fights are fantastical and highly stylised, and the demons are often more comical than frightening.
A few action scenes or darker moments may unsettle a sensitive child. The easiest approach is to watch it together the first time: you'll quickly see how your child reacts, and the film opens up great conversations about friendship and not keeping everything to yourself.
